教育目的/学修到達目標 [Learning Objectives]

Public speaking can contribute to character such strengths as enthusiasm, creativity and self-control, valuable for a polished personality. Within public speaking, oral presentation of research helps to discipline the mind for logical argument, and fosters a facility for spontaneous language use, preparing a student for a range of future challenges such as meetings, teamwork projects and informal conversations. This course contributes to the development of both organized thinking and language skills.

[Learning Goals]

Students will be able to:
• organize each part of a presentation: Introduction, Body, Conclusion;
• deliver fluently English wording typical of research presentations;
• employ presentation skills to enhance their delivery;
• design clear and simple slides;
• improve in handling Q&A sessions.
授業概要/指導方針 [Course Outline / Teaching method]

This class will be conducted entirely online via the Webex system. Working with a research article of their choice, students organize, write and practice presenting in turn their Introduction, Body and Conclusion of a research presentation and later deliver the full presentation. They practice eye contact, appropriate voice, natural gesturing and facial expression. They also become familiar with ways to field questions. Criteria for slide design cover the importance of simple and concise wording, easily understood illustration, and assigning, in principle, a single central idea to each slide.
All sessions will be offered as on-line real-time Webex meetings. The Webex link will be sent by email to registered students.

[Learning time (for review and preparation)]

Completion of the assignment for each class: 2 hours
Review of each class: 2 hours
