In every lecture, prominent scientists, technicians and specialists from science and technology related areas that are active in diverse fields are invited to give their thoughts on science and technology and its future from their viewpoint. The lecture also includes information about what is necessary to become a scientist, technician or specialist, based on the their experiences.
To give students a chance to consider future directions of science and technology without constrictions of information, biological and materials sciences’ frameworks.

1st: Science and scientists (tentative)(Yokoya)
Our president will give students his thoughts on "science and scientists" for the purpose of giving students a chance to consider future directions of science and technology without constrictions of information, biological and materials sciences’ frameworks.(tentative)

2nd: How will science change the way we view the world? (Ozeki)
The meaning of scientific studies is usually discussed from two viewpoints, social usefulness and intellectual curiosity. However, did you realize that there is also another viewpoint? Science is in truth deeply related to how we view the world we live in. Cases where such relationships of science and world perception are found will be introduced from the fields of nuclear physics and particle physics of the 20th century, ecology and its link with environmental protection, and bioethics within advanced medicine.

3rd: Policies and Issues concerning Science and Technology Innovation in Japan (Watanabe)
This lecture will give an overview of the development of Japanese government policy concerning science and technology, with the Science and Technology Basic Law (1995) as a cornerstone, along with helping students grasp current science and technology government policy through structurally outlining the major policy systems and the overall trends of budget and measures.

4th: Bridging Science to Business (Hashimoto)
Cellseed Inc. is pursuing the early realization of regenerative medicine, based upon the Japan-oriented‘ cell-sheet engineering.’ In order to increase the success rate of the commercialization of seeds from universities, people with‘ dual receptors’ who have a full understanding of both science and business, are necessary. This lecture will focus on the career development and human resources necessary for the start-up business.

5th: Scientific Measurement and Innovation (Yoshida)
Scientific development repeats the steps of hypothesis, verification, and modification, and using this method it can said that this is a process where hypotheses become new theories and definitions. As a method of this verification, scientific measurement is essential. This can be understood from the fact that the majority of Nobel prizes have accompanied the development of new measurement methods. The importance of scientific measurement will be introduced centered upon the actual examples which the lecturer has experienced.

6th: The Ability to Create Innovations (Nakayama)
Innovation is not just part of science and technology, it is the creation of intrinsic value. Innovation is achieved through a strong will to create this kind of value for society and mankind. This lecture will introduce how to lead innovations in industry by referring to some cases and consider what will be expected and required of the human resources in the future.

7th: Evolution of Information and Communication Technologies (Hirata)
During the past half-century, information and communication technologies (ICT) have led to a dramatic expansion and changes in industrial structure as well as in our lifestyles. In this lecture, we will outline the future trend of development in ICT, looking back at its transitions. Especially, we will focus on the evolution of AI (artificial intelligence) as the hottest topic and will evaluate its impact on society.

8th: Improvements in Science and Technology and Changes in Medical Treatment (Matsuura)
Recent science and technology developments are truly remarkable and they have led to improvements in medical treatment. As a result of this, the average length of a healthy life has been extended and, while this has led to lengthened life expectancy, this has also led to issues such as our large aging population. This lecture will look at how developments in science and technology have contributed to medical treatment and in turn what problems have emerged because of these contributions.
