1. To understand Japanese society, traditional arts and customs
2. To know more about Nara and and it's surroundings
3. To deepen the interest in Japanese culture

(1) Students will be able to understand, explain, and describe uniqueness of Japanese culture,
(2) Students will learn about Japanese society and be able to adjust well,
(3) Students will be able to (discuss, overlook, organize, and express) evaluate,
(4) Students will learn about differences between cultures and be able to operate at their workplace or home country.

This course covers many aspects of Japanese cuture: history, religion, society, people, traditional arts (tea ceremony, ikebana, calligraphy, noh play), food and festivals. All students are encouraged to participate actively.

9 1/12 [3] Adarsh Bala Sharma Field trip to Kasuga Taisha shrine, Todaiji Temple Study trip to the Shinto's Grand Kasuga Shrine and The Buddhist Temple Todaiji. This is to observe the differences between Shinto Shrines and Buddhist temples.
10 1/19 [3] Adarsh Bala Sharma Noh Play History of the Noh Play, a theatrical form designated as intangible cultural heritage in 2001.
11 2/2 [3] Adarsh Bala Sharma Lecture about Sado, Japanese tea ceremony This lecture explains the uniqueness of Japanese tea ceremony, and an experience to make a tea bowl and observe the manners during tea ceremony.
12 2/9 [3] Adarsh Bala Sharma Field trip to Takayama chasen in Ikoma This field trip is to know about the history of chasen, tea whisks and how skillfully they are made. More than 90% of tea whisks used in Japan are made in Takayama. Students will experience the tea ceremony.
13 2/16 [3] Adarsh Bala Sharma Japanese society, tradition and modernity This lecture explains about hierarchy, work, tradition and modernity in Japanese society.

参考書 Explanations are given in the first lesson. It is not necessary to buy textbooks before the class commences.


履修条件 a) A student in International Program
b) A foreign student
c) A Japanese student with English ability of TOIEC 700 points

English proficiency is must as the all classes will be held in English.

Registration for students will be based on first come, first served basis.
The maximum number of students is 30.
